Project title : DUGONGS WITHOUT BORDERS

 

Goals and Objectives:

 

Goal 1: To enhance capacity for dugong conservation actions at the regional level

Objective 1.1: to implement a regional network of stakeholders capable of exchanging information on

dugongs and collaborating on projects

Objective 1.2: to provide a targeted technical training workshop for network members and follow up

through an e-network

 

Goal 2: To increase knowledge of dugong populations and their status throughout the region

Objective 2.1: to identify current gaps in knowledge and priorities for dugong conservation in the region

Objective 2.2: to initiate research programmes into the status and distribution of the dugong populations

at two pilot sites

 

Goal 3: To improve the conservation status of dugongs at priority sites

3.1: to launch conservation activities with partner organizations at the two pilot sites including but not

limited to awareness-raising, surveillance and monitoring, ranger training, gillnet bans, inclusion of key

habitat within current and proposed MPAs.

 

Goal 4: To raise awareness about the plight of dugongs and positive conservation solutions

throughout the region

4.1: to develop a public awareness campaign through a social marketing pack including posters,

brochures and a DVD in English, French and Portuguese for use by governmental and nongovernmental

bodies concerned with marine conservation activities.

4.2 : to establish a regional ambassadorial team for dugongs comprising of one national celebrity from

each country (Seychelles, Mozambique, Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte, Kenya, Tanzania and

Mozambique) who be involved in the production and presentation of the above DVD and broadcast

throughout each country to raise national interest, understanding and pride in the species.
